On the evening of November 18, the Chinese Physical Society (CPS) celebrated its 90th anniversary at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

Jie ZHANG, President of the CPS and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Gang TIAN, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League (CDL) and President of the Chinese Mathematical Society (CMS), Qikun XUE, President of SUSTech and Vice President of the CPS, and Zhengguo ZHAO, Vice President of the CPS, attended the event.

Other guests in attendance included Academicians Shining ZHU, Haiqing LIN, Benzhong TANG, Xueming YANG, Jinfeng JIA, and Keqing XIA, Baowen LI, Member of the Academia Europaea, Wenchang TAN, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School (PKU Shenzhen), Ling ZHANG, University Council Vice-Chairperson of SUSTech, Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost, and Yusheng ZHAO, former Vice President of SUSTech.

Nearly 400 guests attended the celebration, including experts and scholars from the CPS, various universities, research institutes, enterprises, and representatives of faculty members and students from SUSTech.

Jinpeng HUAI, member of the 20th CPC Central Committee and Minister of Education, Zhigang WANG, Minister of Science and Technology, Xincheng XIE, Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) sent congratulatory videos and letters which were played and read out at the event.

In his video speech, Jinpeng HUAI acknowledged the outstanding achievements made by the CPS in promoting the development of disciplines, promoting science popularization, cultivating top-notch students, and supporting the growth of talents.

He emphasized that the CPS is a key bridge for integrating science and education by supporting colleges and universities to strengthen the development of their physics disciplines and basic research in physics, and achieving major breakthrough results.

He hopes it will continue to support the cultivation of top-notch talents in basic disciplines, guide and support more experts and scholars, and strive to accelerate the development of talents and build a stronger country in education, science, and technology.

Congratulatory letters from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) were also read out during the course of the evening at the celebration.

The Lifetime Contribution Award of the CPS was also announced at the meeting. Ten famous physicists received the award: Guangzhao ZHOU, Kaihua ZHAO, Jiaer CHEN, Naiyan WANG, Zizhao GAN, Guozhen YANG, Xiangwan DU, Guangda ZHAO, Zhipeng ZHENG, and Zhongxian ZHAO.

In his speech, Jie ZHANG paid tribute to the generations of physicists who have pioneered the cause of physics in China over the past 90 years.

He said that the CPS would continue to shoulder the important task of supporting the development of physics in China, the prosperity and progress of physics and its related science and technology, promoting the popularization of physics knowledge, and the expansion of talents in the physics discipline.

Xincheng XIE sent his congratulations via an online link. He said that for a long time, the CPS has organized various academic activities, promoted exchanges domestically and internationally, run academic journals, and carried out science popularization and other undertakings to promote the development and growth of physics in China.

The NSFC has always maintained a close relationship with the CPS, and plays an important role in promoting progress in scientific and technological research and innovation.

He hopes that the CPS and NSFC can further unite and cooperate to make new and more significant contributions to China’s basic research, especially the development of physics.

In his speech, SUSTech President Qikun XUE said that the 90th anniversary celebration of the CPS held at SUSTech is a major event in the physics field and also for the University.

Over the past 90 years, the CPS has made many efforts and outstanding contributions in promoting national scientific and technological progress, enhancing academic exchanges, promoting the development of disciplines, and cultivating scientific talents.

He said that SUSTech would continue to learn from past scientists, carry forward the fine traditions, and continue to build a “Double-First Class” university.

Gang TIAN also spoke at the event and sent his congratulations on behalf of the CMS. He said as partner societies, the CPS and CMS have cooperated closely and supported each other for a long time.

He hopes they will further work together to promote the prosperity and development of China’s scientific and technological undertakings.

International organizations also sent their congratulations via video messages, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies (AAPPS), American Physical Society (APS), Physical Society of London, and Physical Society of Japan (JPS).

The CPS also received warm wishes and congratulations from almost 100 domestic societies, including the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), China Computer Federation (CCF), Chinese Materials Research Society (C-MRS), Chinese Society of Astronautics (CSA), and Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM).

The CPS was officially established in the Science Building of Tsinghua University on August 23, 1932.

It has made historical contributions in leading and promoting the development of physics in China, and has played an important role in fostering innovation and rewarding young learners.

Standing at a new historical starting point, the CPS will continue to unite physicists across the country, uphold the fine tradition and spirit of the older generation of scientists, and make greater contributions to physics research and its application in China.
