Biography

Wei Cai received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Zhejiang University in June 2012. He worked as Research Assistant and Senior Engineer at the Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences in the Second Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China from July 2012 to May 2021, then joined the Department of Ocean Science and Engineering of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) as a research associate professor in May 2021. He is also a member of the National Technical Committee for the Standardization of Submersibles, the assistant of the president of the Academy of Marine Sciences (SUSTech), and the assistant of the director of the Shenzhen branch of the Laboratory of Marine Science and Engineering of Guangdong Province.

Dr Cai has been dedicating his career to marine technology research for nearly 15 years. His research interests include marine sensors, scientific applications of submersibles, and polymetallic sulfide resources in the international seabed area. Taken part in a total of 12 cruises on the China Ocean Voyages, he served as the chief scientist of several cruises, including sea trials of R/V Xiangyanghong 10 (“Qianlong II” AUV) in 2016, R/V Dayangyihao (“Qianlong III” AUV) in 2018 and R/V Dayang (Deep-Sea Drilling Rig) in 2021. In January 2019, he conducted a hydrothermal submarine voyage with “Deep Sea Warrior” manned submersible diving to a depth of 2,773 meters in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Due to advanced research experiences in submersibles, he was appointed as deputy chief designer of technical upgrade and scientific application of “Qianlong II” AUV.
