Professor Zuowei Xie is a member of The Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. He is also a Fellow of Chinese Chemical Society and Royal Society of Chemistry. Prof. Xie is a Chair Professor of SUSTech. Before joining SUSTech, he was a Choh-Ming Li Professor of Chemistry at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Prof. Xie received his B.S. and M.Sc. degrees from Hangzhou University (now Zhejiang University) and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1983 and 1986, respectively. He then pursued studies in a joint PhD program between SIOC and Technische Universitӓt Berlin, and earned his PhD in chemistry in 1990. Prof. Xie’s main research interests center around organometallic and main group chemistry with the focus on (super)carboranes, metallacarboranes, catalytic B-H bond functionalization and small molecule activation, as well as low-valent main group elements. Prof. Xie has made important contributions to carborane chemistry by developing a general strategy for catalytic selective cage BH functionalization and synthetic methods for the synthesis of supercarboranes. He has co-authored over 330 papers, and his works have been highlighted many times in C&EN. Prof. Xie received several prestigious awards including Hong Kong Research Grants Council Inaugural Senior Research Fellowship Award (2020), the Chinese Chemical Society Yao-Zeng Huang Award in Organometallic Chemistry (2010), the State Natural Science Prize (2008), and The Croucher Award (2003) among others.
