Campus Life

Overview

The residential college system is a core part of the comprehensive education at SUSTech. The diverse college culture aims to help students grow responsibly, emotionally and socially, while providing them with a full range of extracurricular learning and life activities. Residential colleges spare no efforts in building a tight-knit professor-student community and provides the opportunity for peer communication across different subjects as well as peer learning support.

State of the Art Facilities

The RC centers comprise student apartment blocks and related support facilities including sports grounds and convenience stores. Each Residential College has its name, culture, tradition, activities and non-official education program, as well as tutoring, consultation, and interest clubs.

A Lifetime Choice

Newly recruited students can join any residential college of SUSTech, and make their choice based on the characteristics of each one. After a student joins the residential college of their choice, the residential college assigns a tutor to each student. The tutor is a full-time professor of SUSTech who will guide the student in his new life at college as well as beyond the four years of study.

The dean responsibility system applies to each residential college. Each college invites famous professors to act as dean of their college, and they will be affiliated with their college office to manage the daily affairs.

Residential Tutors

Residential tutors participate fully in our community life as members of our pastoral care team, and are proactive in attending to the personal and academic wellbeing of our students. Residential Tutors act as role models and mentors to the students living at SUSTech. They are available to assist students as they transition from home to university and college life, or to life in another province or country! They also talk through issues affecting students’ academic/personal lives and offer advice on where to seek assistance when appropriate.

The role of Residential Tutor is integral to the life and community of the College! Our residential tutors are fully involved in College activities and take an active interest in the lives and progress of SUSTech students. As older, more experienced members of the community, Residential Tutors are important roles models who live the values of the College in their daily life. Sometimes they are simply a reassuring presence for students. Residential Tutors do this by being present at College as much as possible, and by being accessible and approachable!

They are individuals who:

are positive role models for students and within the wider University community.
develop and maintain rapport with young adults.
engage with young adults in a respectful and caring manner.
support the College leadership in its vision for the College.
are flexible, cooperative and responsible in all aspects of Collegial life.
have completed an undergraduate degree or be very near to completion.

Diverse College Cultures

SUSTech attracts and supports a diverse faculty that mentors a student body coming from all backgrounds. This is an exciting time for you as you transition into college life. Being in a Residential College, where there is a mix of people with different backgrounds and different interests, will educate you and allow you to meet people you may not have met had you gone to a less diverse school.

This eclectic mix of backgrounds and interests provides you with the global outlook that will enhance your personal development, ensuring that you will become a global leader of tomorrow in this new era.
