Abstract:

Multipartite entanglement is a necessary resource for the development of new quantum technologies in sensing, quantum computation, and cryptography. This "second quantum revolution" holds the promise of achieving performance levels far beyond those of current classical devices.

In this talk, I will provide a concise overview of the fundamental concept of entanglement and present a novel approach for its detection and characterization. Specifically, I will demonstrate a profound connection between the ability to statistically differentiate quantum states and a class of entangled states that prove to be crucial in ultrasensitive metrological and multi-phase interferometric applications.

Augusto Smerzi is the Director of Research at the National Research Council (INO-CNR), co-director, and leader of the theory group, of the QSTAR Institute in Florence.  Augusto Smerzi has served as a consultant and visiting staff member at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He has also held the position of Visiting Professor at the University of Hannover and is currently "Mercator Fellow" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Smerzi's group is internationally recognized for its seminal contributions to the quantum theory of phase estimation. Their research has demonstrated the utility of Fisher information as a tool for characterizing complex quantum states, particularly in terms of their entanglement and metrological properties. Additionally, the group has extensive expertise in studying the nonlinear dynamics of coherent matter waves in dilute, trapped Bose-Einstein condensates.
